Tendinitis: Achilles
What is it?
Achilles tendonitis consists of irritation and inflammation of the large tendon at the back of the ankle. This type of tendonitis is a common overuse injury that tends to occur in athletes who partake in recreational activities. Thus, overuse causes inflammation that can lead to pain and swelling. As a side-note; Achilles tendonitis can also lead to small (Micro) tears of the tendon, making the tendon susceptible to rupture. Macro tears or ruptures of a tendon MUST be corrected by a skilled Orthopedic Surgeon. Micro (Small) tears usually do not require surgery. |
Possible Symptoms:
The Achilles tendonitis patient often notices pain over the back of the heel as this is the point where the tendon meets on the heel bone. Patients with Achilles tendonitis usually experience the most significant pain after periods of inactivity, say for instance waking in the morning and setting about on a morning “stroll”; patients tend to experience pain after their first walking in the morning and when getting up after sitting for long periods of time; i.e. sitting through a two hour movie, etc. Patients will also experience pain while participating in recreational activities, such as running and jumping. Achilles tendonitis pain is most commonly caused by overuse or strain. The “calf” muscles are always involved in this condition (they may feel ‘short’) any treatment for Achilles tendonitis must necessarily involve treatment of these muscles. |
